Himalayan Salt Lamps

According to the EPA, indoor air quality is among the top five environmental health risks. Most Americans spend up to 90% of their day indoors. That fact alone was quite shocking to me, but if that is the case then we need to look at ways to create clean living environment and healthy air quality inside our living and working environments. If you have not already done so, you may wish to click here to read about Clean Air at Home or to read the article on Houseplants = Clean Air click here.

Obviously there are numerous options to have cleaner air, which are outlined in the above referenced articles. A simple and inexpensive contributor to clean air is a Himalayan Salt Lamp. I bought one a few years ago, and use it daily in my office; I keep it next to my computer. I appreciate the artistic and natural simplicity of the stone and the fact that it works to purify the air silently, by emitting negative ions which also help to reduce my stress and increase my energy levels. Another subtle change I appreciate is the fresh smelling air, similar to how the air smells outside after a rain storm.

As the salt lamp becomes warm, it absorbs moisture and the stone can become damp, all of this will build up the ion field and the positive charge of a room can become neutralized. The negative ions cleanse the air by attaching themselves to dust, pollen and other particles in the air. Negative ions are also well known for benefitting the immune and respiratory system, as well as creating a sense of well being, and calmness. On the opposite side of the scale, positive ions in the air found in electronic devices such as TV’s computers, radios and cell phones expose the body to electronic frequencies that can contribute to nervousness, interrupt sleep patterns, inability to concentrate, headaches, fatigue and anxiety. The salt lamp counteracts these frequencies by neutralizing the room with negative ions. The same negative ions you experience in a rainstorm, lightening storm or near a waterfall.

Some people may not notice the subtle changes. Those are usually the same people who don’t notice energetic changes when driving by power lines, or sitting with an electric blanket. If you notice or feel energy, you will notice the difference a Himalayan Salt Lamp can make. Many Europeans agree on the health benefits of salt, as they visit hot springs, salt springs and salt caves to rejuvenate their bodies and recapture a sense of calmness. But since I am not as lucky to have a salt cave nearby, I just keep my salt lamp on.
